The Yamazaki Toki 12 Year Old is widely celebrated as a flagship of Japanese whisky, and it certainly showcases what makes the style distinctive - delicate, fruit-forward, and impeccably smooth. However, we found ourselves somewhat disappointed, though we acknowledge we're relative newcomers to Japanese whisky and perhaps had different expectations coming from a Scotch background. For those who love sweet, fruity, dessert-like whiskies without any rough edges, this will absolutely work. But we found it didn't resonate with our palate. Perhaps our Scotch-leaning preferences aren't aligned with the Japanese approach, but we'd recommend exploring other options unless you're specifically seeking that ultra-refined, sweet Japanese style.
