The Lagavulin 12 Year Old cask strength is released as part of Diageo's annual Special Releases, and while it promises intensity and complexity, we found it fell short compared to both the exceptional 8 and the legendary 16 year old expressions. The high alcohol content brings plenty of heat but doesn't deliver proportional depth or refinement. Where the 8 year old surprises with its bright, zesty character and the 16 year old offers beautiful balance and layers of complexity, the 12 feels somewhat raw and unfinished - more aggressive than sophisticated. At $250, it's difficult to recommend when you could buy the superb 16 year old for nearly half the price, or grab two bottles of the excellent 8 year old. We didn't enjoy this nearly as much as those stellar siblings. Unless you're a dedicated Lagavulin fan committed to tasting every expression, we'd suggest sticking with the 8 or 16 year old instead.
