The Corowa Mad Dog 10 Year Old showcases what Australian craft distilling can achieve with a bit of creativity, and demonstrates the potential of regional NSW whisky making. The muscat barrel aging imparts a distinctive sweet, fortified wine character that sets it apart from traditional bourbon or sherry cask maturation. However, we found this expression struggled to find its balance. The interplay between the fruit, wood, and spice never quite harmonized - each element seemed to compete rather than complement. The finish, in particular, didn't appeal to us, lacking the length and complexity we'd hope for in a 10-year-old malt. While the malty foundations were solid and some may appreciate the sweet fruit notes from those muscat barrels, we felt it was ultimately underwhelming and unbalanced. That said, it may still work for those curious about Australian single malts or preferring sweeter, less complex whiskies.
