We didn't know what to expect from our first ever tasting from Morris in Rutherglen, which is usually known for its wine, tokay and muscat rather than whisky. We were pleasantly surprised. The nose is dominated by peaches and sweet fruit with hints of vanilla and wood, and the fortified barrels add extra complexity and interest to both the nose and finish. On the palate, cherry and chocolate mix with marmalade jam, giving way to rich port flavours and a well rounded, slightly chewy mouth feel with a hint of pepper to finish. At around $100 it's definitely one to hunt down, as it holds its own against others with a much higher price tag, and for its quality we've rated it in the excellent category. At 40% ABV it doesn't have quite the punch of its Muscat Barrel sibling, but that also makes it very easy drinking and a great choice for those new to whisky. It's won numerous awards around the world, including back-to-back Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2023 and 2024, and Gold at the World Whisky Masters as recently as 2026, and we can see why. It's a great drop that won't disappoint, especially for those that like fruit driven flavours.

Official website(opens in a new tab)Top Pick: A standout whisky that punches well above its price. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did!
This is a great all rounder for gathering with friends, family or even on your own after dinner. Being so approachable, it's a great one to share with friends who are new to whisky or introducing someone to Australian whisky. It works well with dark chocolate, a rich fruity dessert or some vintage cheddar, and would suit a relaxed summer evening just as well as a cosy night in. It would also make a special gift for any whisky lover looking to grow their Australian portfolio without breaking the budget.
If you want to support the local Australian whisky industry and see why this has won so many awards, then at this price it's an easy one to recommend. If you are new to whisky and like sweet, fruit driven flavours without any smoke, this is a low-risk, high-reward place to start. And if you enjoy it, the Muscat Barrel is well worth trying next for a little more depth and intensity.
