Lark's unique post malt smoking process produces a significantly softer and more floral undercurrent than peated expressions from Islay. The nose opens with vanilla and smoked honey, with dried fruit and a subtle hint of the ocean. On the palate the wine casks come through with dark chocolate and wafts of sea spray, before a soft smoke on the finish with marmalade, ginger biscuits and a warm, woody vanilla. If you enjoy subtle complexity, rather than bold campfire punch, this will really appeal. However we found it lacking in intensity, and while balanced and enjoyable, it didn't really deliver on our expectations. It picked up a Master medal at the World Whisky Masters in 2023, so it clearly has plenty of fans.

Official website(opens in a new tab)If you have not had a peated whisky before, this is an excellent introduction to a soft smokey whisky with plenty of complexity and balance. We would recommend trying this soft Lark peated Australian whisky before embarking on the more intense Islay expressions. It's also great alongside smoked salmon, or a platter of cold meats and aged cheeses on a cool autumn evening.
This is a great way to start exploring peated whisky and support Australian distillers. It works well with a variety of foods and is sure to impress important guests. If you already love the big Islay whiskies, this offers something gentler and a little different. Just expect soft smoke rather than a big punch of peat.
